Shayonti-Salvi

About the Artist

Shayonti Salvi began her career in Mumbai as an Interior Designer, where she worked for seven years with NPAPL and Sanjay Puri Architects. The birth of her two children acted as a catalyst, urging her to shift professions and follow her dream of becoming an artist.

Shayonti studied ceramics under Ray Meeker, Deborah Smith, and Cory Brown, at Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry, after acquiring a Diploma in Ceramics from the LS Raheja School of Art, Mumbai. She currently works out of her studio in South Mumbai, where she creates sculptures and pots. Shayonti also holds regular classes, imbibing the love of clay in her students.

Shayonti explains her affinity to the medium by saying, “For me, being a ceramist is in many ways a testament to my love of art and nature. What amazes me about ceramics is its use of all five elements of nature and for that, it is to me, a truly complete medium of expression.”

Work Experience

I worked as an Interior Designer in the corporate sector from June 2002 till March 2009 (details listed below)

However, for 3 years after that, I took a maternity sabbatical where I was concentrating on raising my two infants (now aged 5yrs and 6yrs)

Although, throughout my Interior Design career, I enrolled in various ceramic workshops as a hobby, it was only after my younger child turned two in 2012, that I decided to take ceramics further.I now function out of my studio in Mumbai where I make sculpture, pots and also teach students to love clay.

That nature is in a constant state of creation, is not news. But the extent of perfection, however, within that sphere is one of the most amazing phenomenons that mathematicians and artists discovered many moons ago.

Every one of us, and everything is a result of this divine proportion, the PHI…without anyone orchestrating the process. It’s a miracle that our species hasn’t been able to, nor ever will, be able to fathom. In our limited understanding, we have coined many names…I simply call it ‘Nature’.
